Semi Permanent Makeup Facts

My Guide to Semi-Permanent Makeup: What to Do After Your Microblading, Powder Brows or Lip Blush Treatment

If you’ve just had your microblading, powder brows or lip blush treatment at Laura Kate Artistry — congratulations! You’ve taken a big step towards effortless, polished, semi-permanent makeup that enhances your natural beauty.

To make sure your results heal beautifully and last as long as possible, here is my complete semi-permanent makeup aftercare guide, covering everything you need to know about microblading aftercare, powder brow aftercare, and lip blush healing.

Why Aftercare Is Crucial?

Semi-permanent makeup (SPMU) — whether brows, eyeliner, or lips — works by carefully placing pigment below the skin’s surface. This does cause a little trauma to your skin, but don’t worry, it’s all part of the process. And trust me, how you look after your beautiful new brows or lips in the days and weeks after your appointment truly shapes the final result — from the richness of the colour to how defined and even everything looks, and how long it lasts.

If you skip aftercare or rush things — like getting them wet too soon, scratching, or spending too much time in the sun — you’ll risk things like fading, patchiness, or even infection. On the flip side, if you’re gentle and follow the advice here, you’ll get the best possible results and make the most of your investment.

Brow Aftercare (Microblading & Powder Brows)

What to Expect While Healing:

  • Immediately after treatment: brows may look darker and more defined than the final result — totally normal.
  • In the first few days, the skin may feel tender, tight, or slightly swollen.
  • Days 3–10: flaking or light scabbing may happen; pigment can look uneven as the skin sheds naturally.
  • After 2–4 weeks, the true brow colour develops as the skin settles.

Aftercare Do’s:

  • Keep brows completely dry for the first 1–2 weeks — avoid water, steam and sweat.
  • If advised, gently clean using a damp cotton pad or recommended cleanser.
  • Apply your given aftercare balm sparingly (a rice-grain amount).
  • Sleep on a clean pillowcase or fresh towel.
  • Keep hair away from brows, especially when sleeping or showering.
  • Protect from sunlight; once healed, apply SPF daily.

Aftercare Don’ts:

  • Picking, scratching or removing flakes.
  • Makeup, retinol, serums, exfoliants or acids on or near the area until fully healed.
  • Heavy exercise, saunas, steam rooms, swimming or hot yoga for 1–2 weeks.
  • Letting your fringe or hair rest on your brows.
  • Sunbeds or direct sun exposure.

Lip Blush Aftercare

What to Expect While Healing

  • Right after treatment, lips may look bold in colour and slightly swollen.
  • Over the next few days, dryness, peeling, and flaking are normal.
  • Colour will lighten significantly before gradually returning and settling.
  • Many clients are mostly healed within 4–7 days, with colour continuing to develop over 1–2 weeks.

Aftercare Do’s:

  • Clean using cool, boiled water or a recommended gentle cleanser.
  • Keep lips moisturised with the provided aftercare ointment.
  • Use a straw when drinking for the first few days.
  • Allow peeling or dryness to shed naturally.

Aftercare Don’t:

  • Hot drinks for the first 24–48 hours.
  • Spicy, salty, acidic or messy foods for the first few days.
  • Kissing, sweating, swimming or strenuous exercise for 4–7 days.
  • Apply lipstick, gloss or regular lip balm until fully healed.

General Aftercare Principles

These universal guidelines support smooth healing and long-lasting results:

  • Keep the area clean and dry.
  • Avoid makeup, exfoliants, retinoids, and chemical treatments in the area until it heals.
  • Avoid sweating, steam, heavy exercise and swimming for the first 7–14 days.
  • Use only the aftercare products provided or recommended.
  • Avoid picking the area at all costs.
  • Keep out of direct sunlight and avoid sunbeds; use SPF once healed.
  • Use gentle skincare only; avoid alcohol-based products.
